After almost 16 years, I had a surprise visit from my boss and was told I was being made redundant. I had half expected this a year ago, yet it was still a surprise to be hit yesterday. I have much to be thankful for, having had steady employment since graduating and as far as I can see I am being treated fairly...however it is a sobering time to be thrown onto the jobs market.

Pro Melrose, thanks for your advice. I have been offered an outplacement service and I have no experience of that. I do want to take things slowly as I would like a different and less stressful direction.

surely there will be redundancy pay type thing? From your exploits I don't think you'll have any trouble finding a new job (if you want one, you could of course retire and write about food) so don't worry

Pro You are spot on. I do see this as an opportunity and a blessing. I have been fairly fed up over the last two years but have not worked out what to do as an alternative. I now have no excuse to do the research.

Pro It was a short term shock. I saw the axe hanging over me a year ago and it did not fall. So it was a surprise for a few minutes but feels liberating now!

This happened to me almost exactly three years ago - just before I joined blog.co.uk in fact. Although I haven't been able to chalk up earnings like my former salary. There have been some definite pluses - I like working from home and I would never have had an opportunity to publish while employed (even though I worked for a publisher!).
I'm not sure if I would have done anything differently had I had the benefit of hindsight in 2005 but my advice would be to take things slowly. I had the benefit of being signed up with an outplacement agency (Penna). This didn't actually lead to anything directly but it was a positive, interesting experience.
